Datepositive helps deal with stigma

A gay man who became HIV positive in the mid 1990s is using because he believes there is a stigma attached to having an STD.

Chris* says that the stigma attached to being HIV positive is worse in the UK than in other countries.

“It is very difficult to live with,” he said. “People can be scornful, and it is due to fear and a lack of knowledge.”
The 48-year-old professional from London said that his work place has been supportive, and for this he is thankful.

It has not been the same with his family, who asked him: “How could you be so irresponsible?”.

“My family was not compassionate, there was condemnation.”

He believes that Datepositive offers an invaluable service.

“With knowledge there can be an eradication of fear. Ignorance breeds fear, knowledge breeds understanding.”

* Chris is a member of Datepositive. His name has been changed to protect his identity.
